Why I Give 10% of Profits to Helping the Homeless Students of Dallas ISD

· Fall,Holiday,Events,Parties,Brands

Part of what makes Claire Rathbun Floral a little bit different from other event florists in Dallas, Texas is the fact that I donate 10% of profits to helping the homeless students of the Dallas Independent School District. I want to use this blog piece to share with you how this came to be.

About three or four years ago, I read an article in the Dallas Morning News about the catastrophic number of homeless students that attend DISD schools. Almost all of the high schools in this district hosted a weekly “Drop-In Center” for these students, during which the kids could get support such as bus passes, listen to speakers, or just hang out with their friends. The job I had at the time was very flexible, and the Reader’s Digest version of the story is that I coordinated special breakfasts to be donated to the weekly drop-in center at a high school near my house. Generous folks in the community could sign up to donate and bring breakfast on Friday mornings. I was lucky enough that I could join the kids on Friday mornings for breakfast, and it was so great to get to know them!

Fast forward a year or so. I no longer worked at the flexible job, so I was no longer able to hang out for breakfast, but was still able to coordinate the food donations. In October of 2019, a tornado wiped out this particular high school, and these kids started attending classes at a temporary school that, quite frankly, isn’t really all that close to the old school. Then Covid happened.

These kids need resources more than ever. If you would like to know more about the two organizations to which I donate 10% of profits, please click here. If you would like to view the Amazon wish list for the district’s homeless education department, click here.
